FAQs

Little tidbits of information you might want to know about us, hostels, & Fort Collins.

What is a hostel?

Hostels are probably the least understood of all options for travel.  A hostel is essentially a hotel featuring more shared space, and the benefits of a social experience. Dormitory style bunk beds, in-room shared bathrooms, our large kitchen, yard, & hangout space is what sets us apart from your standard run-of-the-mill hotel. Our home-like setting is key in differentiating ourselves from the often-isolating effects of a hotel room. We offer both private rooms and shared bunk rooms so you have the option to give yourself total privacy or allow yourself to meet others, share stories, and make new friends!

Is the Fernweh close to fun stuff?

Yup. We have an amazing location in Old Town, which is what makes us a perfect choice for visiting Foco. We’re 2 blocks from the CSU campus and 5 blocks to College Avenue, where you’ll find loads of great restaurants, bars and attractions. We’re also within 2 miles (a 10 minute bike ride) of all the best breweries in town, and a 10 minute drive to the beautiful Horsetooth Reservoir.

What on earth is “Fernweh”?

fern-weh , noun , orig. German :: It is the longing for far-off places; a crave for travel; an ache for places you’ve never been. Fernweh sums up ones desire to leave their familiar surroundings and explore what the world has to offer.

Does the Fernweh have WiFi?

Of course! Free wifi is available throughout the hostel & the password is posted everywhere so you never have to skip a beat in the cyber world.

Is the Fernweh safe?

This Fort Collins hostel is definitely safe. Once you check in, you’ll be given a door code that gives you 24-hour secure access. Our doors automatically lock behind you so you never have to worry about another guest not locking up. We are in an extremely safe & friendly neighborhood as well.

Are the bathrooms shared?

Our small private room is our only room without a private bathroom. The bathroom is only two feet from the room though, and is not private because it has a washer/dryer available in it for all guests. It is professionally cleaned and sanitized daily.

Can I wash my dirty mountain gear at the Fernweh?

Yes, we have laundry available for $6 a load for guests. Please let your host know if you’d like to do a load or two.

How do I get there / Can I park on-site?

You can view directions from the airport, etc here. When you get to town, you’ll continue west on Mulberry. Just after you pass Whitcomb (Aggie Liquor), you’ll turn into the alley just before our white picket fence. You can park on your left in one of our eight parking spaces behind the place. If the parking area is full, you can park on any of the surrounding neighborhood streets (except Mulberry). There is 2 hour parking Monday - Friday from 8am-6pm. Please respect our neighbors and do not park in their alley parking.

Is the Fernweh dog friendly?

We love well-behaved dogs here at the Fernweh & are happy to accept them in our private rooms, for an additional $10 a night. You’ll need to tell us that you’re bringing your pup prior to making your reservation, and please read our full pet policy here to see if it’ll be a good fit for you and us.

Is there anywhere to store my bike / kayak / paddleboard / skis ?

Yes, we have a large, secure garage to lock up your gear, and we have a big ol bike rack out back as well if you’re bringing your bike with you.  You can store all your equipment at the hostel for your Fort Collins adventures.

Do you have bikes available?

Yes, Fort Collins is a HUGE biking town, and we have several bikes available for guests to use at the hostel.

Do you accept walk-ins without a reservation?

Since we’re small, we highly prefer reservations. Our office hours have changed due to COVID-19, so please call to inquire about booking.

Can I drink alcohol at the Fernweh?

Yes, you can! Fort Collins is a huge beer town, and we love to enjoy a good microbrew here. Drinking is certainly allowed, but drunkenness is not. Please respect your fellow guests and don’t act like an idiot, or you may be asked to leave.

Is this a youth hostel? Will I be the oldest person there?

No! Hostels are not just for “youth”, as many misconceive. The hostel here in Fort Collins is completely family-friendly and welcomes a mature crowd. We highly encourage guests who have never stayed at hostels before to come and see for themselves.

What time can I check in?

Check-in is between 4-10pm, unless arranged otherwise with staff. If you’re planning on getting here before 4 or after 10, give us a call at (970) 219-9493 to see if we can arrange it for you. Check-out is 11am.

Do I have to bring my own sheets?

Please don’t! We provide all fresh linens here, and have a “no outside linens” policy. In order to keep the Fernweh squeaky clean & free of potential pests, please don’t bring your own sleeping bag, pillow, etc.

What’s your cancellation policy?

If you cancel 5+ days prior to your arrival, you’re off the hook. 2-5 days prior, 50% of your reservation total will be forfeited. No-shows or cancellations within 24 hours of your arrival date will be charged 100% of the total reservation. Different rules apply for groups of 10 or more & can be viewed here.
